Detroit Pistons spotlight Wayne State's student veterans [video]
Wayne State's Student Veterans Organization (SVO) will be honored by the Detroit
Pistons at tonight's game as part a special Veteran's Day edition of the team's Come Together Game Changers program.
The program celebrates everyday people making a difference in their communities through service, leadership and volunteerism. Members of the Pistons' staff were on campus Friday to interview SVO officers for a video spotlight that will be shown during tonight's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In the video, SVO President Patrick Hannah speaks to the immense support the organization provides to WSU's community of combat veterans.
"We want to be an organization that not only welcomes every veteran to the university, but also gives them a place to call home, a place to build camaraderie, to make friends, and to feel included," Hannah says. "Through the Student Veterans Organization, we're able to support each other and more importantly, help each other graduate."
Leading student veterans to graduation is one of the main focuses of the organization. When Hannah took over as president, the graduation rate for veterans at WSU was at 13 percent. Today, that rate is at 50 percent and growing.
