Wayne State University Application Process for Veterans and Military Service Members
Benefits:
- No application fees for veterans, military service members, and their dependents using VA Educational Benefits.
- In-state tuition rates and pre-priority registration.
- If you are currently serving, you can receive a 50% tuition-only discount.
Application Directions
Before starting your application, ensure you have one of the following documents scanned for upload or email submission:
- DoDID, VetID, Discharge Certificate (DD 214), most recent Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), or State ID with "Veteran" identifier.
Step 1: Submit Your Application
- Apply Online: Apply Now
- Application Fee: Do not pay any application fee. It is waived for veterans, military service members, and dependents using VA Educational Benefits.
- Proof of Military Service: Submit one of the following: DD 214, VetID, Current LES, DoDID, or State ID with the "Veteran" logo. Upload it directly during the application or email it to ag9201@wayne.edu.
- For Undergraduates: Submit an official military transcript (JST - Joint Service Transcripts).
- For the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF), request transcripts here: CCAF Transcripts Request.
- Submit Transcripts: Request and submit official transcripts from all institutions attended before, during, or after military service.
Step 2: While Awaiting Admission
- If you’ve activated your VA Educational Benefits or are using VR&E benefits, fax or email a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility (or NOBE for Selected Reserve GI Bill®) to us.
- If you have not activated your VA benefits, go to Vets.gov.
- Complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov. It’s recommended to apply for Federal Financial Aid, even if you don’t plan to accept it, as it’s needed for many private grants, loans, and scholarships.
Step 3: After Receiving Your Admittance Letter

Activate your Wayne State account by logging into Academica.

Schedule academic advising appointments through the STARS system: STARS Appointment System.
- Choose "Schedule an Appointment" and select "Appointment with my Assigned Advisor."
- Your advisor will provide a Plan of Work or signed DegreeWorks printout and inform you if any placement testing is required.
- After meeting with your academic advisor, schedule an appointment with a VA School Certifying Official (SCO) under "Supplemental Advising / Veteran Advising".
- The SCO will assist with VA-related advising and will need your Plan of Work and Certificate of Eligibility if you plan to use VA Educational Benefits.

For those using Chapter 31 (VR&E) or Chapter 33 (Post 9/11) benefits, complete the Vet Success Services Application for additional support, including free online tutoring and student technology.

Attend an Orientation or schedule a Campus Tour to familiarize yourself with Wayne State University.

Register for courses via registration.wayne.edu. Watch the "How to Browse, Register, and Drop Courses" video for guidance.

Join veteran-specific informational meetings throughout the year. RSVP for upcoming meetings here.
Step 4: After Registering for Classes
- Request VA Certification: Complete the Request for VA Certification Form.
- Change of Program/Place of Training: Complete the applicable Change of Program or Place of Training Form if you’ve changed schools or your academic program.
- Company Sponsored Tuition Payment Agreement: For those using Chapter 33 or Chapter 31 benefits, print and complete the Company Sponsored Tuition Payment Agreement and email it to Student Accounts Receivable at bursar@wayne.edu.
Step 5: Get Connected!
- Visit the Student Veterans Resource Center and the Student Veterans Organization on the 6th floor of the Student Center Building.
